We’re looking for a Fractional HR Manager to support our Canada employee population locally on a contract basis. This is a hands-on role focused on keeping day-to-day HR operations running smoothly, supporting managers and colleagues with local people matters, and helping ensure our Canada processes are compliant, practical and people-focused.
The role sits within Bede’s wider People team and works closely with colleagues across Toronto, Newcastle and Sofia to deliver a joined-up colleague experience. It would suit someone who enjoys variety, is comfortable working autonomously, and is confident acting as the local HR lead for a small employee population (<20).
We also want to be clear upfront that this is a genuinely fractional role, expected to average around 2 days / 16 hours per month, flexed around business need. It’s likely to suit someone looking for a steady, flexible contract alongside other work, rather than someone looking for a role with more regular or intensive hours.
We expect the successful person to be based in the Toronto / GTA area, with some flexibility around how support is delivered across the month depending on business need. Attendance at our monthly office day would be expected.Â
What you'll be doing
You’ll act as the main point of contact for HR support in Canada, helping to deliver a positive and well-run employee experience across the full colleague lifecycle.
In practice, that means:
- supporting in day-to-day HR operations for our Canada-based colleagues and managers
- managing onboarding and offboarding activity, documentation and local process ownership
- coordinating payroll, benefits and HR administration with internal teams and third-party providers
- owning the relationships with our Canadian specific third-party providers e.g. payroll & benefits
- advising on Ontario / Canada employment matters to ensure Bede remains within requirements of local labour law
- own and maintain local policies and people processes, guiding internal teams as appropriate to ensure compliance
- supporting and coaching managers with employee relations matters, absence, performance, conduct and wellbeing issues, with sensible escalation where needed
- managing statutory and company leave processes
- preparing contracts, letters and people documentation accurately and on time
- helping ensure our people data and records are well maintained
- assisting in any Canadian people specific audit requirements
- partnering with the wider People team on annual people activity and local delivery in Canada
- building strong working relationships with our Canada team and helping create a consistent Bede experience locally
This role is intentionally focused on local HR operations and employee support in Canada. It is not designed to be a broad strategic HR Business Partner role across multiple regions.Â
What we are looking for
- Solid generalist HR experience in Ontario / Canada
- Good knowledge of employment standards, local HR processes and practical people risk spotting
- Experience supporting managers and employees across core HR matters, including onboarding, documentation, leave management and employee relations
- Confidence coordinating payroll and benefits processes with providers and internal stakeholders
- The judgement to work independently, while knowing when to escalate more complex issues or when collaboration will bring the desired results
- A calm, practical and approachable style
- Strong communication skills and a high level of discretion and diplomacy
- Coaching approach to grow and bring out the best in our people
- The ability to prioritise well and stay organised in a role with a broad remit
It would also be useful if you have:
- experience working in a standalone or small-team HR role
- experience supporting a distributed or international business
- experience working closely with third-party providers
- CHRP or CHRLÂ designation, or equivalent local HR credibility
